The documentary short Hyphen is a personal examination of filmmaker Laura Kamugisha’s mother, a Rwandan political refugee reflecting on the complicated notions of identity and community that followed her transition from Rwanda to Canada. At times both harrowing and full of warmth, the film is filled with personal musings and beautifully composed shots – a deeply intimate portrait that could only be made with the love and generosity of someone close to the subject. The way the filmmaker is able to capture and honor her mother is in itself a radical act of kindness, and that sentiment bleeds through every second of this film.
